How to Choose a Bird Feeder

Bird feeders are a great no-mess way of providing food for the birds that visit your garden. But how do you choose a bird feeder when there’s so much choice?

When choosing a bird feeder, it’s important to consider the following:

The type of food you’ll be using

There are five basic types of bird feeder on the market, which roughly speaking cater to the different types of food that you might put out for the birds.

  1. Seed and Nyjer Feeders
  2. Sunflower Heart Feeders
  3. Peanut Feeders
  4. Energy Ball and Suet Cake Feeders
  5. Ground Feeders

If you’re a newcomer to feeding the birds, it’s a good idea to start with a pre-filled feeder such as our Peckish Complete Filled Feeder, a ready-to-use feeder which is pre-filled with our premium Peckish Complete Seed Mix. This mix is packed full of 12 different ingredients that’s been formulated to attract a wide variety of birds to your garden therefore a great one to start with!

How long you want the bird feeder to last

We conveniently have prefilled feeders like the below that can then be refilled with the equivalent feed inside for continued us. Then just simply recycle once they are no longer able to be used. This is a great entry level option and is cost effective too.

However, if you’re looking for something to really last and look good too. Try one of our robust stainless-steel designs, such as our Peckish All Weather Feeders. They are available for seed, peanuts, Nyjer, energy balls and suet. They are simple and easy to fill and hang. And they will of course last longer than plastic feeders. Metal feeders are also less likely to be damaged by squirrels.

If you have a problem with squirrels!

We offer two feeders in our Peckish range which are squirrel proof: Squirrel Proof Seed Feeder and Squirrel Proof Peanut Feeder. We also offer Squirrel-proof Suet Cakes which contains chilli, an ingredient that squirrels dislike and therefore steer away from. Did you know that birds can’t taste spicy food? So its perfect for birds to still enjoy while keeping squirrels away from the food.
